This vacuum is, without a doubt, the best vacuum I have ever used! I had been searching for the perfect vacuum to suit my needs (every room in my home except the kitchen and bathroom has high pile carpeting); I also did not want to pay a small fortune. I found exactly what I was looking for in this vacuum. Please be aware though, that this is not a vacuum for everyone. 1)It is no lightweight, weighing in at 18lbs. (Who needs to lift weights? lol) 2)It has a shake out cloth bag (This is a BIG plus for me-I dislike vacs with cups as I find they fill up too quickly in my large home, and I have always had a really hard time finding the right size paper bag for any other vac). 3)It has no attachments (easily remedied with the purchase of an inexpensive canister for edge cleaning and quick jobs). 4)It has a 50 foot power cord-I LOVE being able to vacuuum most of the house without having change the plug! (though it takes a bit longer to wind up the cord). 5)Overall this vacuum is designed to do ONE job really well-CLEAN CARPETS. (ie, don't try to clean hardwood or tile with it, but, for me, that is what my broom is for). No other vacuum I have ever used has worked this well (I have been trying friends' and family's for quite a while now, trying to figure out what I want, but now I think I'll stick with vacuuming my own house). Even my neighbor has commented on how much better my carpets look and feel. This is one powerful vacuum!

I would personally rate this vacuum 5 stars for its carpet cleaning ability, but if you have any limitations such as carpal tunnel or a bad back, get a lighter model. Because this item is heavy, it cleans carpet extremely well, but the sacrifice is that you can't just turn corners one-handed like many models. I have gone through 3 vacuums in 3 years because the cheap plastic parts didn't hold up to weekly vacuuming. I take very good care of my appliances, but plastic is not made to last 20 years like the expected life span of this Sanitaire model.

It actually isn't that heavy I weighed it and its 14 lbs with the cord on the ground as it would be in use. most good vacuums weigh in at this weight or are heavier. The handle is strong and I regularly pick up from the handle not the head as some cheap vacs require. This vac kicks Kirby's butt which weighs more costs more and isnt near as serviceable. Sanitaire does make lighter vacs that I think beat oreck so those psuedo commercial units should be avoided get a real one for less money.

update: After almost a year of use I am still happy with this vacuum but sometimes the bag smells when I vacuum and I have to wash it. I like not having to find paper bags but I think the advantage of not having dust when emptying and no smell from dog hair would make me get the sanitaire with the paper bag, same vacuum just different model number. Of course I am a carpet cleaner and vacuum a lot so it may not apply with less use.

update: After 2 years of use it still looks and runs great. The chrome top stays bright. I have replaced the motor because I ran a long time on a damaged fan blade so it shook apart it cost me 45.00. I also switched bags for 25.00 so now I can use the Paper style Eureka F&G paper bags. Its nice how available parts are. People still comment on what a good job it does.

Update: After 3 1/2 years I am repalcing it. Its 2nd motor is failing (Poor design it fails at the rivets they vibrate loose). The handle doesnt stay up. The hinge to the handle broke and I fixed with a screw but it squeeks as you push back and forth. The push on clip to hold up the cord has broken twice and now the cord is taped up with duct tape (the push on clip is a bad design and fails quickly). My replacement bag has a bad zipper (don't buy if the zipper doesnt have metal teeth). Its spring atatched cover has lost springs which I have replaced periodically. There really isnt one thing that still works properly in it and many of the industrial features now seem to me to be just low tech cheapness. I just repalced it with a Hoover C1431-010 Guardsman Commercial Vacuum Cleaner With 6.0 AMPs of Power. The hoover is cheaper and it seems to have as much or better suction even though it is 1 less amp. It has some better design choices (like a big front cord holder instead of side wraps, a level setting with your foot, bettter cord less likely to twist) we'll see how it holds up though.

Twenty plus years ago I used many models of Sanitaire while doing commercial work; I quickly found out the benefits of having the disposable bags after I had cleaned an empty apartment & was vacuuming my way out of the unit when the top of the bag came loose so that it turned into a very efficient dust blower setting off the smoke alarm & covering everything in a light coating of dust so that I had to go thru the unit again ... but not until I explained to the apartment manager that dust not smoke setoff the alarms.

I bought the Sanitaire with the disposable bags to avoid the potential for repeat accidents and to avoid the odor of the cloth bags ... if memory serves me well I do believe that you can convert to a paper bag for less than $30.00 by purchasing the bag you wish to use for different jobs.

IMO these are one of the best vacuums for carpet as the beater bar works very well, sand particles will come to the surface & bounce into the air in front of the vacuum to be easily picked up and the carpet looking well groomed; if I a person cleans newly installed carpet often paper bags can become filled quickly, owning both bag systems is cost efficient for commercial use.

There are several models (and names) of the same sweeper with different lengths of cord, motor power and cosmetic differences and weight reflected by the different prices, these cleaners are great for flat open spaces, a small canister can save time for small bathrooms, under furniture, stairs & edging; in furnished homes larger furniture can be moved a few times a year depending on your desire to move furniture.

My Sanitaire lasted more than 10 years; I had inherited 3 other vacuums but will soon send them to the dump and purchase another Sanitaire.

I you wish to clean carpet without the sometimes hard to use tools this line of vacuums will get the job done as well as any I have ever used, I must note that I have not used any of the Sanitaire products since my last one bit the dust about 8 years ago after more than a decade of rough service; I had stopped doing commercial work and get by with others I had but miss my Sanitaire.

I chose this model to write about as it is close to the many models I had experience with in the 80`s thru 2000.

I preferred the models with a paper bag and a more powerful motor, I do not care about a light and other Swiss Army Knife features some vacuums offer; do your homework to get what you need at the best price; if you want tools for furniture, corners and areas above the floor you need something lighter, this line of Sanitaire cleans carpet well.
